Alex Rook is the optomistically naive main character of this series (which takes place in Quebec). He started to work for Mushka after he was fired from a different job. He doesn't know how to feel unhappy, but he does know what unhappiness is. He has a strong French accent. He sees good in everyone and never frowns.

Mushka Queen is the unhappy owner of Queen Pawnshop. She sees no reason to appreciate life, so she fills the void by smoking and burning herself with her cigarettes. She abandoned Catholicism after high school. She almost never smiles ("almost" usually means Hank). She used to be a showgirl, but the place she worked for closed down. She swears a lot.

Taffy is Mushka's "pet". His father is from Uranus and his mother was a white mouse. He is a big fan of The Beatles, mostly because he was their pet. He can't speak or write, but he does play Beatles music depending on what the conversation is. He is 400 years old.

Ramona Bishop is a sleepy Russian who works for Mushka. She believes that communism will rise again and has faith in the Russian empire. She is often seen asleep, but when she's awake, she is very intelligent. She's a drinker of alcohol. She has little respect for her boss and employees. Mushka admits that she's afraid of Ramona.

Hank Kingston is an American explorer who decided to visit Quebec. He immediately falls for Mushka (and vice-versa). He's not a good explorer, actually. He cares about the other characters. He's deathly afraid of mimes (which Quebec is full of). He usually shrugs off Alex's optomism.
